Krishna Alexandra is a singer, writer, director, and cultural artist working across theatrical, classical, and Jewish diaspora musical traditions. Her career has spanned three decades and two oceans, and she has achieved cross-genre success as both a creator and performer.

Her recent work as a composer and librettist includes Dublin Rising, an epic musical currently in commercial development in New York, about three patriotic Irish women living in extraordinary times (co-written with Lórien Patton, Krishna's long-time creative partner), and The Book of Esther (with Patton and Sam Lucas), a children's musical currently available for licensing. She also led a team, including Patton and Lucas, in the development of Itzayana: A Dream Circus, a narrative cirque production. Her current writing project is an opera based on a beloved sci-fi classic. Krishna's career as a dramatic writer started at the tender age of ten with Running Away to Broadway, her first original musical (co-written with Rod Martin and Pierre Grill), produced at Manoa Valley Theatre, one of Hawaii's leading professional theatre companies.

Krishna brings a warm dramatic mezzo-soprano voice to concert, synagogue, recording studio and theatre. She has an unusual combination of depth and breadth, authentically inhabiting jazz, musical theatre, and classical music alike. A working sh'liach tzibbur and a student in the ALEPH Cantorial Ordination Program, her relationship to Jewish music is lived, not curatorial. She comes from a family of klezmers, chazzanim, and rabbis, carries more than twenty-five years of immersion in Ladino repertoire — including maqam-based ornamentation, improvisation, and conversational facility in the language — and traces, in her classical work, how the Jewish vocal tradition shaped Western art music from hazzanut through Bernstein and Gershwin.

Her programs span unaccompanied chant, art song, folk and popular repertoire, bringing audiences into direct encounter with a living musical tradition.

In addition to her current work at ALEPH, Krishna Alexandra has a Master's in Theatre from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a BFA in Illustration, with a concentration in Experimental Theatre, from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Her Master's thesis, on collaborative writing techniques for commercial theatre has been downloaded over a thousand times. Krishna's work as a singer and songwriter has been featured on more than 50 albums over the last 25 years, and she has toured throughout the United States with the bands She Flies and The Dervishes.
